What's included

What's included

MIL-STD-1472H contains thousands of individual design considerations spread across hundreds of pages. We created this spreadsheet to make those criteria easier to navigate and apply during actual engineering work.

  • Section 4 (General Requirements)

  • All Section 5 design-criteria areas

  • 5,000+ checklist items

  • Paragraph and source-page references

  • Applicability and review status columns

  • Verification method and evidence fields

  • Project Summary page

  • Filterable Excel format

What is MIL-STD-1472H?

What is MIL-STD-1472H?

MIL-STD-1472H is the Department of Defense design criteria standard for human engineering. It provides requirements and guidance for designing military systems, equipment, software, and facilities around human capabilities and limitations.

The standard covers a wide range of topics including controls, displays, labeling, anthropometry, maintainability, workstations, automation, information systems, unmanned systems, and physical environments.

At more than 400 pages, applying MIL-STD-1472H during a design review can require navigating hundreds of individual criteria. This checklist organizes those criteria into a more practical format for reviewing, filtering, documenting, and tracking requirements throughout development.

How to use the checklist

How to use the checklist

The checklist is designed to support both early design reviews and more detailed human engineering assessments. Use the filters to focus on the sections relevant to your system, identify which criteria apply, and document how each requirement has been addressed.

For each checklist item, you can track:

  • Applicability to your system or program

  • Review status

  • Verification method

  • Supporting evidence or documentation

  • Reviewer comments and findings

Each item also includes its MIL-STD-1472H paragraph number and source page so you can quickly return to the standard for the complete requirement and supporting context.

Checking requirements is only part of effective human factors engineering. Determining which requirements apply, how they should be interpreted, and how they influence design decisions often requires understanding the users, tasks, operational environment, and broader system requirements.

HF Designworks can support teams with MIL-STD-1472H tailoring and design reviews, Human Factors Engineering, Human Systems Integration, usability evaluation, workload assessment, and human-in-the-loop testing.
